AUSTIN (KXAN) -- Austin Energy announced Thursday that it made a 20-year deal worth $288 million with Jupiter Power, a locally founded large-scale battery manufacturer, in order to increase the city's storage capacity ahead of a 2027 goal.

Stuart Reilly, Austin Energy interim general manager, called increasing battery capacity "an important component of [Austin Energy's] energy strategy."

The city-owned utility said that it has a goal of reaching 125 megawatts of battery storage by 2027. It added that battery capacity alleviates key limitations of renewable energy generation from solar and wind.

In the release, Mayor Kirk Watson called the deal "more than an investment in infrastructure."
