A social worker testified Thursday that while she was concerned and “uncomfortable” that two women now on trial for murder were using zip ties to fasten the clothing of two boys they were trying to adopt, she didn’t speak to them about it nor report it to the Children’s Aid Society.
Brandy Cooney and Becky Hamber have pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder of the older boy in their care, age 12, and not guilty to unlawful confinement, failing to provide necessaries of life and assault with a weapon — zip ties, the Crown alleges — of his little brother.
The Crown has alleged that Cooney and Hamber despised the brothers and left the older boy, who suffered from severe malnutrition in his final year alive, to die in their basement.
