GLENWOOD — Staples-Motley senior Audrey Brownell is one step closer to defending her Class 1A State title.
Brownell won the Section 6-1A title Thurday, Oct. 23, with a winning 18:24.0 to advance to state. Brownell led the Cardinals girls’ team to fourth.
Grant Nelson’s fifth-place 16:38.4 and Karly Haverkamp’s 11th-place 20:04.4 paced the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverine teams to second place and a spot in the Class 1A state tournament.
The top two teams and the top six individuals not on those teams advance to the state meet.
WDC’s Owen Anderson finished 13th in 17:07.2, followed by Lane Kaufman in 14th, Noah Stroeing in 16th and Brennan Simmons in 17th for WDC’s 65 points. It's the boys' first state trip since 1993.
For the girls, Lydia Oldakowski finished 19th, followed by Brielle Kern
