B.C.’s attorney general says she’s pleased at new bail changes by the federal government, and that they address two high-profile cases that have concerned British Columbians.

Niki Sharma said Ottawa’s reforms, which are intended to put some repeat and violent offenders behind bars for longer, before and after conviction, are in line with what B.C. was expecting.

“The federal government announced and introduced today a bill that really shows B.C.’s leadership,” she said. “Many provisions in that bill came straight from our work to make sure the streets are safer.”

Sharma said expanded reverse onus provisions in high-risk cases, and expanded sentencing for serious repeat offenders, which includes the frequency and seriousness of past offences, are positive moves by federal Justice Ministe
