EC Throsby's abattoir at Whittingham near Singleton has submitted a development application to double its capacity and operate 24 hours/day, seven days a week.
The cost of the upgrade to handle the increase in production is estimated at $10.5 million
Operating since 2000, the abattoir can currently process 500 head of cattle each day and employs 145 staff.
In the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) on the proposal, the increase in capacity would see 1,100 head processed each day and staff numbers would increase to 445 working three shifts each day of the week.
The Throsby name has long been associated with meat processing in the Hunter Valley and across Australia and the Tasman.
The business was founded by the late David Throsby, who used to operate abattoirs at Maitland, Gosford, Wy
