Liberal Senator Sarah Henderson has joined a top lawyer and victim of crime in blasting the Allan government over its bail laws following the Victorian Premier’s defence of the status quo.

It comes after a violent machete attack at Melbourne’s Luna Park on the weekend sparked outrage, with three young men charged over the incident released on bail despite opposition from police.

Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan called the men’s alleged behavior “shocking” but stood by her government’s bail laws when pressed over community safety measures on Thursday.

Ministers have revealed to The Herald Sun they believe the Premier wished to tighten bail laws further, but that the move would not get the necessary support from her cabinet.
