DANE COUNTY, Wis. (WKOW) -- The Dane County Board of Supervisors on Thursday officially recognized October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, highlighting the importance of survivor support and community action to end domestic and intimate partner violence. The board passed Resolution 2025 RES-182 to mark the observance.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month has been observed nationally since 1989 to raise awareness of the prevalence and impact of intimate partner violence and connect survivors with resources. In Dane County, about one in five homicides are IPV-related, and roughly 1,000 incidents are reported to law enforcement annually. Women make up the majority of local victims, and Native American, Black, and Hispanic residents face disproportionately higher rates of victimization.
