Hawaii island police are investigating a string of small brush fires that occurred this morning along Queen Kaahumanu Highway in Kona.

Police said at about 8 a.m., at least eight fires measuring about 100 square feet in size each were observed along the highway, between Hulikoa Drive and Hina Lani Street.

Hawaii County firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fires and hot spots. No injuries were reported and no property was damaged.

Police said the cause of the fires remains unknown, but they were suspicious in nature.

“Police are on heightened alert in light of the current red flag warning from the National Weather Service,” said Major Thomas Shopay III in a news release. “We ask the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.”
