Evan Rothamel finished second and Andrew Shepherd third to pace Cloquet to a Section 7AA boys cross country championship on Thursday at Hibbing Golf Course.
Grand Rapids senior Brenden Sylvester notched his seventh individual victory of the season, turning in a time of 16 minutes and 7.9 seconds but Rothamel ran about six seconds behind, with Shepherd 13 seconds behind him. Ellis Allen (16:52.9) took ninth to boost the Lumberjacks.
Cloquet finished with 59 points to win the team championship and qualify for the state meet, while Hibbing qualified as the second-place finishers with 71.
The top two teams in each section advance to state, scheduled for Nov. 1 at Les Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights, along with the top six runners not on already-qualified teams.
