WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) - Monarch butterflies are making a pit stop at Botanica as they migrate from Canada to Mexico for the winter.

Every year in September and October, monarch butterflies leave their homes in Canada and head towards Mexico.

Similar to birds, monarchs are the only butterflies known to make a two-way migration.

"We are in a flyway for monarchs in general, going from Canada to Mexico, where they roost, and Botanica is a way station where they stop," Erin Meyers, assistant director of education at Botanica, said. "We have - we grow milkweed here and that's what they lay their eggs on and that's what their larvae feed on."

Botanica says they have tagged and tracked about 200 monarchs and have seen thousands.
