HOUSTON COUNTY, Ga. — For the past three weeks, the Houston County Sheriff’s Office has temporarily changed how it handles people with minor probation violations, delaying their booking into the county jail .
Sheriff Matt Moulton said the decision comes as the jail nears capacity.
“We’ve had to make some difficult decisions in what we are accepting into the facility right now,” he said.
As of Thursday, the jail is housing 590 inmates, down from a high of 669 last week. That surge followed a multi-agency operation by the Warner Robins Police Department, which brought in 27 new inmates.
