Every elected lawmaker must swear an oath of office to uphold the Constitution of our great state. It seems some of them have forgotten that oath, and unfortunately, the consequences fall disproportionately on racial minorities, particularly Black voters, whose voices are routinely diluted by unfair redistricting practices.

Ohio lawmakers were constitutionally obligated to provide a congressional map for review by their peers and citizens to be passed no later than Sept. 30. They failed to do so, continuing a pattern of neglect that undermines the electoral power of marginalized communities.

The new deadline is Oct. 31, but the map revealed on Halloween could be more troubling for Black and minority voters and scarier than any spooky trick-or-treat costume,
