Roy Keane earned a new level of respect for Wayne Rooney after the young striker stood up to him at the start of his Manchester United career. Keane may have carved out a reputation as a no-nonsense captain but Rooney was seemingly not as intimidated as some of his new United team-mates.

United splashed out an initial £20million , rising to £27m, for Rooney, who had recently showcased his world-class ability for England during Euro 2004.
