Actor Mohanlal and the Kerala Government encountered a judicial hurdle as the High Court quashed an order legitimizing Mohanlal's ownership of elephant tusks. The court directive calls for a new government notification to be issued.

The High Court found procedural lapses in the government order, noting the 2015 notification was never published in the Gazette, a critical procedural step. This technicality rendered the license permitting Mohanlal to retain the tusks null and void.

In 2011, elephant tusks were seized during a raid at Mohanlal's residence by the Income Tax Department. At that time, Mohanlal lacked a valid license, which was later granted in 2015 but now has been revoked due to the procedural oversight.
