To describe the state of our nation in a few simple words, “we are at a crossroads.” It is self-evident that our country is so overwhelmingly divided that people cannot speak to each other without hurling insults, making threats, endorsing violence or even acting on violence.

We need to lower the temperature. From my standpoint, when I have criticized a candidate, I have focused on records and never engaged in attacks about their personal lives. I never called for violence or used vile rhetoric. The same can be the case for most educated Americans.

I commend Borough President Vito Fossella as being the only Staten Island Republican elected official to condemn both sides for engaging in abhorrent rhetoric. This is the epitome of true leadership. We need more people like that in government
