ALGONA, Iowa —
Classes are canceled Friday for Algona schools after officials said they received a threat about an explosive.
According to a post on the school's Facebook page, the threat may be part of a larger "swatting" effort impacting schools across the country.
"Today the Algona CSD received a threat that of an explosive in our buildings. We have been working with the Kossuth County Sheriff's Department and the Algona Police Department to ensure the safety of our buildings by following our regular safety protocols. We have learned through working with state and federal authorities that this is a threat that has been made in other places throughout the nation. We will make a further announcements on this evenings events after noon."
