PHOENIX (AZFamily) — An Arizona swimmer made waves to support a heartwarming cause, and that is Something Good!

Deborah Gardner set a new Guinness World Record — becoming the oldest woman to swim the Catalina Island Channel. Gardner, at 66 years young, made the grueling 21-mile journey in just over 13 continuous hours.

She joins an elite group of fewer than 900 people worldwide who have braved the treacherous, frigid, shark-inhabited waters between the island and the California coast. The channel is most often called the “Mount Everest of open water swimming.”
