(CNN) – Jonathan Rinderknecht, the man accused of triggering one of the worst fires in Los Angeles’ history, appeared in court Thursday.

He pleaded not guilty to starting a fire that eventually turned into the Palisades Fire but will remain in custody.

Rinderknecht was arrested in Florida earlier this month. He is facing several charges, including arson.

If found guilty, he could face up to 45 years in federal prison.

Prosecutors say Rinderknecht started the Lachman fire last January.

While firefighters put out the flames, the fire continued to smolder and burn underground.

A week later, strong winds spread the fire and it became the Palisades Fire, one of the most destructive fires ever in LA.
