Federal elected officials are set to dig into what they’re calling “the growing crisis in Canada’s automotive sector,” following a revelation by global carmaker Stellantis it will move production of the Jeep Compass model from a plant in Brampton, Ont., to Illinois, while also investing $13 billion in U.S. operations.

A parliamentary committee on Wednesday approved a motion to study the state of Canada’s auto industry, including billion-dollar deals the federal government previously inked with Stellantis for an electric vehicle battery plant in Windsor, Ont.

The company’s decision was widely viewed as a response to President Donald Trump’s automotive tariffs, which he has wielded in an effort to force companies to restore their American manufacturing footprint.
