NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Election Day is November 4, 2025, and polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Certain parts of our state use a ranked choice voting system.
How does rank choice voting work?
Ranked choice voting allows voters to rank their candidates from favorite to least favorite, with first-choice votes counted first, and then if that candidate doesn’t have enough, your second choice is counted next, and so on.
Ranked choice voting was designed to eliminate vote splitting and runoff elections. The argument behind ranked choice voting is that it allows voters to pick their favorite candidate first without the worry of throwing away their vote. This also eliminates runoff elections if no candidate is able to get 50% of the vote, which saves the city money and the people's time.
