(FOX40.COM) — Just before the holiday shopping season, Target announced its largest layoffs in a decade.

Target released a notice on Thursday that it's eliminating around 1,800 corporate positions, cutting 8% of Target's corporate workforce globally. The new Target CEO, Michael Fiddelke, revealed that the decision was made to eliminate unnecessary positions that prevent accelerated initiatives and decision-making.

Fiddelke issued a note to personnel announcing the downsizing, with more details expected to come on Tuesday. While the global workforce may be impacted, a majority of the affected employees are based at the company's headquarters in Minnesota. Fiddelke asked employees at the Minneapolis offices to work from home next week.
