Weight-loss injections such as Ozempic and Wegovy could help prevent heart attacks and strokes — even if users don’t shed the pounds.

Scientists at University College London found that semaglutide, the active ingredient in both drugs, reduces the risk of serious cardiovascular events by 20 per cent, regardless of weight loss.

The breakthrough indicates that the injections offer heart benefits beyond their fat-burning effects.

Professor John Deanfield, who led the study, said the results could change how doctors view the drug’s potential.

He explained: "These findings reframe what we think this medication is doing.
