The ironic song by the English punk band The Clash in 1981 encapsulates the struggle women (and men) often face at some point during their career : "Should I stay or should I go now?" The lyrics speak to the uncertainty that can affect the decision to leave a job or company.

“Should I stay, or should I go now? If I go, there will be trouble. And if I stay will be double.” The words articulate the difficulty of weighing the potential benefits of leaving against the comfort of staying.

When contemplating a job change, it's wise to create a list of what you love about your job and what frustrates you. Making the list can help clarify the factors you need to weigh. Sometimes one word or phrase has so much power that it can push you to the “I should leave now” side of the decision.
