Arkansas inmate Abdul Maalik Muhammad has reached a settlement with state prison officials that will transfer him back to the state prison unit where he was previously held before he was abruptly sent to a federal prison out of state earlier this year. The settlement also will ensure he is able to continue legal work on behalf of himself and other inmates by placing him in a job in the prison legal library.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Arkansas and law firm Morrison Foerster represented Muhammad in the lawsuit.

Muhammad, born Gregory Holt, is serving a life sentence for aggravated residential burglary and a 40-year sentence for first-degree domestic battery. During his time in prison, Muhammad, a practicing Muslim, has successfully sued the Arkansas Department of Corrections (
