One person was killed and six others were injured during a shooting at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania on Saturday night. The incident occurred during the university's homecoming celebration, which was attended by students, alumni, and visitors. The Chester County District Attorney's Office reported that the shooting took place around 9:30 p.m. at the International Cultural Center (ICC) on campus.
District Attorney Christopher de Barrena-Sarobe confirmed that one individual, who was armed, has been detained. The shooting disrupted a post-football game tailgate and Yardfest event, which was meant to be a joyful occasion. "This was to be a joyous occasion," said Lincoln University Police Chief Marc Partee. "Homecoming — when individuals come back, and they give back to their alma mater, and they live the good memories of their time at Lincoln University... This was interrupted by gunfire that should not have occurred."
The scene was described as chaotic, with people fleeing in all directions after the shots were fired. Some attendees were treated for injuries sustained while trying to escape, including being knocked to the ground and trampled. Witnesses reported seeing individuals receiving CPR at the scene.
Authorities have not yet determined the motive for the shooting or whether there were multiple shooters involved. The investigation is ongoing, with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies collaborating. The university briefly went into lockdown, which has since been lifted, although roadblocks remain in place around the campus.
The District Attorney emphasized that there is no active threat to the campus, stating, "Today, we're operating as if this is not an incident where someone came in with the design to inflict mass damage on a college campus."
Counseling services will be available for students and staff starting Sunday morning, as the university community grapples with the aftermath of the violence. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro expressed his support for the university and local law enforcement, urging the community to avoid the area and follow guidance from authorities.
The Chester County District Attorney's Office is leading the investigation and is asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact law enforcement. "We are going to not stop until we are able to arrest and to find the person or people that shot all of these people at Lincoln University," de Barrena-Sarobe said. The university, located about 55 miles west of Philadelphia, is known as the first degree-granting historically Black college in the United States.
This incident adds to a troubling trend of violence during homecoming events at historically Black colleges and universities, with recent shootings reported at other institutions as well. The community is left in shock as they mourn the loss and seek answers in the wake of this tragic event.
