Nick Mangold, a celebrated former center for the New York Jets, has died at the age of 41. The team announced his passing on Sunday, stating that he succumbed to complications from kidney disease. His death occurred just days after he publicly revealed his health struggles and need for a kidney transplant.
Mangold's announcement on social media came less than two weeks before his death. He shared that he had been diagnosed with chronic kidney disease due to a genetic defect identified in 2006. In his message, he expressed hope and positivity despite the challenges he faced. "I always knew this day would come, but I thought I would have had more time," he wrote. He also mentioned that he was on dialysis while awaiting a transplant and had no family members available to donate a kidney. He appealed for a donor with type O blood.
The Jets organization expressed deep sorrow over Mangold's passing. Team owner Woody Johnson praised him, saying, "Nick was more than a legendary center. He was the heartbeat of our offensive line for a decade and a beloved teammate whose leadership and toughness defined an era of Jets football." Johnson also highlighted Mangold's character, noting his "wit, warmth, and unwavering loyalty" that made him a cherished member of the Jets family.
Drafted by the Jets in 2006 from Ohio State, Mangold played his entire 11-season career with the team, from 2006 to 2016. He was selected to the Pro Bowl seven times and was inducted into the Jets' Ring of Honor in 2022, solidifying his legacy as one of the franchise's greatest players.
Mangold is survived by his wife, Jennifer, and their four children: Matthew, Eloise, Thomas, and Charlotte. His contributions to the team and the community will be remembered by fans and teammates alike as they mourn the loss of a beloved figure in Jets history.
