COLUMBIA — Santee Cooper will negotiate a sale of the two partial reactors at the V.C. Summer nuclear plant with a global private equity investment firm that plans to complete the units in a deal that’s expected help ease the state's energy crunch.
The bid by Brookfield Asset Management was announced Oct. 24.
The state-owned utility's board approved a proposal to sign a letter-of-intent and to finalize an agreement with the global firm, including a sale price.
Brookfield's proposal brought the "great final value" and "the greatest level of certainty and credibility," Santee Cooper CEO Jimmy Staton said.
"This is a great day," he said. "It's a great day today ... for Santee Cooper. It's a great day for our customers. And it's a great day for the state of South Carolina."
