The Nigerian government announced on Friday a major shake-up of its top military commanders, replacing the chief of defence staff as well as those of the army, navy and air force.

The move comes less than a week after Nigerian media reported a foiled coup plot — although the government and military denied the reports.

“I have approved changes in the hierarchy of our armed forces to further strengthen Nigeria’s national security architecture,” President Bola Tinubu said in a brief statement.

While the government has officially denied that there was a coup plot, a senior administration official told AFP: “Normally when such a thing happens, it means there is a gap in intelligence. No leader would accept that.”
