PORTLAND, Maine — City officials say the Oceania Insignia cruise ship will be allowed to dock in Portland on Sunday, despite a recent norovirus outbreak on board that has sickened several passengers.
The ship is scheduled to arrive at the Ocean Gateway terminal on October 26. According to a news release from the City of Portland , the Insignia has been dealing with a norovirus outbreak in recent days, but cases have been steadily declining. As of Friday, only eight passengers remain in isolation, officials said.
Norovirus is highly contagious and causes gastroenteritis, resulting in vomiting and diarrhea. The CDC estimates the virus affects up to 21 million people in the U.S. each year. Most cases resolve within one to three days.
