Australia will face a weekend divided by two seasons, with brutal heat baking the north while icy air grips the south.

Sky News weather meteorologist Tamsin Green said “relentless heat” continues to build across the Northern Territory and Queensland, with several areas already nudging record-breaking temperatures that will persist through the weekend.

“We’re still seeing that relentless heat building across the north, across parts of the Northern Territory and Queensland,” Ms Green said.

“Longreach at 43 degrees and Mount Isa also at 43 degrees. The Longreach record for October is currently held at 43.9 degrees, so potentially over the weekend we could get close to breaking that record.”
