The ATA will decide how to respond to a back-to-work order when it is passed on Monday

Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) president Jason Schilling is lashing out at the UCP government’s decision to table back-to-work legislation Monday.

“The government’s decision to unilaterally end this legal labour action is neither necessary nor justified,” Schilling said. “It is undemocratic and deeply disrespectful to teachers, to students and to the collective bargaining process itself.

“By legislating teachers back to work, the government has chosen to silence tens of thousands of voices.”

Next steps, he said, will be considered by the Provincial Executive Council — the ATA’s governing body — once the details of the back-to-work legislation have been released.
