Young parents Jeremie and Kaitlyn faced a challenging situation on Friday as they rushed to the hospital for the birth of their son, Jack. Stuck in heavy traffic on Highway 174, they quickly realized they would not make it to the hospital in time.
As Kaitlyn was in active labor, Jeremie spotted an Ottawa Police Service cruiser near the Montreal Road exit. Desperate for help, he waved down the officer.
“I was flagged down by Dad on the 174, and he told me that his wife felt the baby’s head,” said Constable Nicolas in a statement. He immediately escorted the couple off the highway, where he learned that the baby had already been born.
Constable Nicolas called for backup from Sergeant Charron. Together, they ensured that Jeremie and Kaitlyn were safe while waiting for Ottawa paramedics to arrive.
“It was a very unique and surreal moment I will remember for the rest of my career,” Nicolas said. He noted that such moments are rare in policing, making them particularly memorable.
The Ottawa Police Service congratulated the family on social media, welcoming baby Jack to the world. They praised Kaitlyn for her efforts during the delivery and mentioned that Jack’s big sister was excited to welcome him home.
This incident highlights the unpredictability of life and the importance of community support during critical moments. The officers' quick response ensured a safe delivery for the family, even in the midst of traffic delays.
