The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) is warning anyone with a personalised number plate that they may have to take immediate action or risk a £1,000 fine. The DVLA maintains the registration and licensing of drivers and vehicles in Great Britain.

It maintains nearly 53million driver records and more than 47million vehicle records. It is also works the collection and enforcement of vehicle excise duty - widely referred to as road tax - which stood at £8.4billion in 2024/25.

As part of its efforts to keep track of vehicles, it issued a warning on social media to anyone with a personalised number plate. It read: "Do you have a personalised registration that is not on a vehicle? If it’s been 10 years since the latest certificate or retention document for your registration was issue
