In an unprecedented environmental experiment, the Delhi government is preparing to conduct its first-ever artificial rain on 29 October, aiming to clear the capital’s worsening air quality after Diwali.
The project, led by IIT Kanpur in coordination with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Pune, will use cloud seeding technology to trigger rainfall over parts of Delhi.
The initiative, costing ₹3.21 crore, is being hailed as a bold scientific attempt to tackle the city’s recurring pollution crisis.
What exactly is artificial rain ?
Artificial rain, or cloud seeding, is a weather modification technique that helps enhance rainfall by encouraging condensation in clouds. It does not “create” rain but increases the likelihood of rainfall from existing moisture-laden clouds.
