SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) -This week is National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week.

A 2023 report from the Arkansas Health Department shows that nearly 300 children reported elevated blood lead levels.

A common source of lead exposure, now banned, is deteriorated lead-based paint, which was commonly used in the United States before 1978.

Lead can also be found naturally in dust and soil. Medical professionals advise practicing good cleaning habits.

“(Children) they’re outside, they’re playing, they’re touching everything. So, good handwashing and washing toys,” said Cindy Tull, nurse practitioner at Jordan Valley Community Health Center. “Wiping, mopping floors if you have linoleum, hardwood, or tile. Wiping dust off windowsills and dusting your home with a wet cloth.”
