CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - David Freeman was standing in the median at Freedom Drive and Morehead Street when he watched the end of a police chase erupt into a gunfight on Thursday.

“I’m a veteran, so I heard the first shots. I was up on that hill, I was gone,” Freeman said. “I was freaking out.”

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said 28-year-old Joseph Andrade shot at police officers during the chase and after it ended in the intersection, before those officers returned fire and killed Andrade.

Andrade is alleged to have shot two people minutes prior on North Hoskins Road, police said.

One of those victims, 38-year-old Justin Carlton, later died.
