THORNTON — An injury to a critical player two plays into a game would be enough to shake any football team, but on Friday night at No. 5 Riverdale Ridge, fourth-ranked Broomfield nearly pulled off the comeback story.

Nearly.

Only two yards and nine seconds separated the Eagles from a 4A North 2 League championship, one that ultimately fell into the hands of the Ravens with their 16-13 victory. In one of the final plays of the game, mere minutes after Riverdale Ridge quarterback Ricky Weeks exited with an injury, backup quarterback Landon Banks connected with Roman Garcia for the go-ahead score, only to see the Eagles block their extra point.

By that point, it didn’t matter. Broomfield didn’t have enough time to make up for the late, 3-point deficit in a game that was cursed for starting
