EL MONTE — The El Monte football team celebrated a 38-21 victory over South El Monte on Friday, which clinched at least a share of the Mission Valley League title, and avenged last years’ loss to the Eagles.
“Last year we had both of our linebackers out, and both of our guards were out,” Lions head coach Hector Spathias said. “We still should’ve stepped up and played better.”
With the win, the Lions (7-2, 5-0) need a victory over Gabrielino (7-2, 4-1) next week to clinch the league title outright.
Even with Friday’s win, Spathias was not completely satisfied, noting they could have played better on both sides of the ball.
