IS SANCTIONED HOMELESS ENCAMPMENTS THE ANSWER

I think most Winnipeggers are frustrated with the lack of progress in addressing homelessness. But I don’t believe we should just throw our hands up and give up on helping the people who live on the streets of our city. Instead, we should take a long, hard look at what’s being done in Halifax. Sanctioned encampments there really seem to be working, according to Marion Willis at Street Links, who’s just back from visiting that city. Councillor Cindy Gilroy also went. They met with Halifax’s director of housing and homelessness, Max Chauvin, who showed them around. The number of tents is limited in these designated areas, which include services such as outdoor toilets and garbage removal. Back here in Winnipeg, I’ll be curious to see how it goes
