NEW CITY – A second case of measles this year has been confirmed in a Rockland County resident, County Health Commissioner, Dr. Mary Leahy said Friday.

The new case is not connected to the previous case in August, she said.

After returning home from international travel, the resident visited a healthcare facility on Tuesday, October 21, and reported a rash the following day, which was confirmed to be measles.

Known cases are being traced and evaluated for immunity.

Measles is considered the most contagious disease and can live in the air for up to two hours after the infected person has left the area. About 90 percent of unvaccinated people exposed to the virus will become infected, Dr. Leahy said.
