Throughout the world, the Jewish people have just completed the month of Tishrei and the four holidays that highlight that month: Rosh HaShanah, the Jewish New Year, a time of renewal, contemplation and introspection; Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, a time of fasting, prayer, asking for forgiveness for wrongs committed, whether intentionally or not; Sukkot, the Festival of Booths, which reminds us of the fragility and uncertainty of life; and Simchat Torah/Shemini Artzeret, when we complete the yearly cycle of reading the Torah (the last chapter of Deutoronomy) and immediately turn back to the beginning (Genesis) and, literally, begin again.
