Residents are celebrating as plans to concrete over a popular sports field to create a 900-space car park look set to be scrapped.

Canterbury City Council (CCC) unveiled proposals in its revised draft Local Plan last month to move Wincheap Park and Ride to Thanington Recreation Ground - less than 500 metres away.

But the idea was branded “horrific” , with more than 100 objectors gathering for a public meeting amid fears a precious community green space would be destroyed.

The plans involved building over the recreation ground and pitches next to the Thanington Neighbourhood Resource Centre.

But papers submitted yesterday as part of the city council’s draft 2026/27 budget have revealed bosses now intend to spend an initial £500,000 on a new multi-storey car park at the existing Winc
