The White House said on Friday it had learned there likely will not be a release of inflation data next month due to the US government shutdown, which could leave a gap in a data series stretching back more than a century.

An impasse between Republicans and Democrats in Congress has resulted in a widespread federal government shutdown, now in its 24th day, and has halted the publication of most data about the US economy.

"Because surveyors cannot deploy to the field, the White House has learned there will likely NOT be an inflation release next month for the first time in history," the White House said in a statement.

The White House did not elaborate. The Bureau of Labor Statistics repeated earlier statements that apart from the recall of some staff to generate the Consumer Price Index
