My landscaper prunes my shrubs every year about this time. I don’t like the way he prunes. My spring blooming shrubs have very few flowers. My neighbors have the same shrubs with lots of bloom. Also, I don’t like their ball and box shapes. How can I solve this problem?
Yours is a common problem. Most landscape contractors prune with power clippers. They prune everything in the fall because all their regular work is done but they want to keep working so they will get paid.
When they prune spring flowering shrubs in the fall, they remove most of the flower buds which are set on the plants in late summer. Changing the pruning time to spring would solve the lack of flowers. However, it requires a different kind of pruning to return shrubs to their natural shape and thickness.
