A special law that imposes a new compensation model on doctors and ends their ability to exert pressure was passed under closure early Saturday morning, just before 4 a.m.

The bill was adopted by a vote of 63 to 27, with Premier François Legault present.

“He’s trying to make a big splash by hitting doctors with a bill that frankly makes no sense,” said Vincent Marissal, Québec solidaire’s health spokesperson, after the vote.

Under the new law, doctors are now prohibited from engaging in “concerted actions” that could hinder access to care or education, under threat of severe penalties.

For example, if three doctors jointly decide to leave the public system or stop teaching, they could face harsh sanctions: fines of up to $20,000 per day, disciplinary measures, and more.
