MORGANTOWN -- Empty possessions and missed opportunities plagued West Virginia's football team Saturday night inside Milan Puskar Stadium.

The Mountaineers went for it seven times on fourth down, with five attempts coming in the first half, and only succeeded twice, while also going 3 of 14 on third down.

Those little things carried a large load in WVU's 23-17 homecoming loss to the TCU Horned Frogs, making it five straight losses for WVU.

The Mountaineers also came up short late in the game, as they failed to recover an onside kick, which was a mere few inches away from being West Virginia's ball.

The six-point loss was West Virginia's smallest defeat since the beginning of Big 12 Conference play.

The Mountaineers had lost their first four conference games by an average of 27.8 point
