Tom Aspinall's first UFC heavyweight title defense did not go according to plan, as an anticlimactic ending saw Ciryl Gane accidentally poke both of Aspinall's eyes (15-3-1 MMA) at 4:35 of Round 1.
The fight was ruled a no-contest, likely setting up a rematch between the pair. The UFC has yet to decide on the situation either way.
Aspinall and Gane (13-2, 1 NC MMA) were both visibly upset, as until the accidental foul, both traded punches and looked for a fight-finishing KO/TKO sequence.
Aspinall was still trying to process what had happened, struggling to see in his post-fight interview.
"This is bulls---," Aspinall said. "The fight was just getting going."
Gane said he'd entertain a rematch with Aspinall, apologizing for his actions. It's still up to the promotion, though.
