BUFFALO, N.Y. — The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles and Department of Environmental Conservation are reminding drivers to stay alert this fall as deer and moose become more active on roadways across the state.

Officials say the seasonal spike in animal movement, combined with reduced visibility at dawn and dusk, increases the risk of collisions.

"A chance encounter with a deer or moose is much more likely this time of year," DMV commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder said in a statement. "There are steps you can take to decrease your risk so you can get safely to your destination."

DEC Commissioner Amanda Lefton added that motorists should pay extra attention during periods of low light.
