The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed Odisha on alert as the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm within the next 24 hours and further intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by October 28.

IMD Bhubaneswar Director Manorama Mohanty said, “The system is likely to strengthen into a cyclone soon and may intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm by October 28 as predicted.”

According to the IMD, Cyclone Montha is expected to cross near Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam in Kakinada, along the Andhra Pradesh coast. The wind speed is forecast to range between 90 and 100 kmph, gusting up to 110 kmph.
