CHICO — Chico officials and community members celebrated the completion of the Esplanade Corridor Safety and Accessibility Improvement Project at a ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday morning.
The project, which has been in various stages of planning since 2015, was originally conceived because of growing safety concerns on the road. Chico’s Public Works Engineering Director, Brandon Ottoboni, said it began with a feasibility study, trying to figure out what they wanted The Esplanade to look like.
Ottoboni added that there were a lot of “deficiencies” on the road that needed to be addressed.
“There was no real way for bicyclists and pedestrians to safely get down The Esplanade to downtown or to areas of destination, whether it was the hospital or facilities around the hospital,” he said.
